Topsail Island Area Golf Courses
While Topsail Island does not have a golf course on the island, there are several courses close by for you to experience while on your vacation. I have been playing golf for 45 years, so when I moved to the Topsail area, one of my first questions was, where will we play golf? Many of the courses are semi-private which offers golfers the opportunity to experience a variety of courses without the annual membership fee or having to find a member to ask you to play as their guest.
North Shore Country Club, Sneads Ferry
One of the favorites of Topsail Island visitors is the North Shore Country Club. It is a Bob Moore design, located on the mainland, just over the north end bridge. The course offers beautiful water views of the coastal marshes combined with inland holes that give you a reprieve from the coastal breezes. There are many natural areas and tree lined holes that wander through a beautifully laid out neighborhood. It is not unusual to see an alligator or at least a turtle sunning on the banks of the ponds.
North Shore has a 4 stars rating from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play. With four sets of tees and their new championship bermuda greens, this layout works for both the novice and seasoned player.
Castle Bay Country Club, Hampstead
Castle Bay is located just off Hwy 17 in Hampstead, NC. This is a Scottish Links course at the beach! There are no trees on the course, but plenty of challenge from tall bunkers, water hazards and waste areas. This course will test your skill in factoring the wind on every shot. The online reviews will let you know that this course is a great buy for your money and referred to as a Diamond in the Rough. If you have never experienced a links style course, this is a great choice for you.
When you finish your round make sure you visit the Kings Table Restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner.
Olde Point Country Club, Hampstead
Olde Point is a Jerry Turner design, built in the 1970’s. It is located just 15 minutes from Topsail Island in Hampstead, NC. The course sits on rolling terrain, with many lakes and streams surrounded by wooded areas. The course has Bermuda fairways and Paspalum greens.
Olde Point offers five sets of tees to make it enjoyable for all skill levels. Check out their on-line booking specials.
Belvedere Golf Course, Hampstead
Belvedere is designed by Russell Birney and offers the six par 3’s, seven par 4’s, and five par 5’s for a par 71. The front nine leads you out to the inter-coastal waterway and then back to the clubhouse. The back nine takes you inland before returning you to the clubhouse. You will experience wind from every direction on this course.
The on line reviews from 2014 indicated the greens needed improvement. Belvedere took that feedback to heart and made significant improvements in the greens in 2015. We just played in the VFW tournament in October and I only heard praise for the greens from all the contestants.
Bear Trail Country Club, Jacksonville
Bear Trail is a Rusty Simmons and Gene Daniel design located in Southwest Plantation, just south of Jacksonville, NC. It is located on 600 acres, with 500 homes, and surrounded by peaceful walking trails.
Bear Trail offers a state of the art driving range and advertises being the ideal course for beginners and/or novice golfers.
